Study of the Clitocybe flora in Michigan has revealed new evidence which contributes to a revision of the genus. Certain characters of the fruiting body are emphasized, more than in previous works, in separating taxa within Clitocybe. The genus is divided into sixteen sections. Previously proposed type species do not satisfy the requirements of the International Rules of Nomenclature, and a new lectotype, Clitocybe clavipes (Fr.) Kummer, is proposed. The fruiting patterns of Clitocybe are discussed, with special comment upon the length of growing season, and on the various habitats where Clitocybes have been found.
