Morphometric and meristic variations in lake char subpopulations of Lake Superior

Fifteen morphometric and seven meristic characters were studied in 103 Lake Superior lake char of four forms: lean, siscowet, halfbreed, and humper. The significant morphological differences between the lean lake char, Cristivomer n. namaycush and the siscowet, Cristivomer n. siscowet, coupled with the existing information on the biology of the two forms, support their subspecific status.

The lake whitefish, Coregonus Clupeaformis (Mitchill) of Lac la Ronge mature and spawn at the age of 8 years or older. The spawning season lasts from late October to middle of November, and the individuals spawn in alternate years. The age-length relationship based on 1611 whitefish, caught during the years 1948-1954, reveals that the growing season extends from late May to early October, and that whitefish up to age 5 increase in length and weight comparatively faster than the older fish.
