St. Bonaventure, Minister General of the Franciscan Order from 1257 to 1274, articulated an ideal Franciscan spirituality in his commentary on the Gospel of Luke. This paper analyses the various aspects of the Bonaventuran ideal from its historical setting and explores the notion that scholastic exegesis is a viable genre to extract not only theological and philosophical themes but also sociological insights into medieval society. It demonstrates that the Commentarius in Evangelium S. Lucam projects a spirituality shaped not so much by theological tradition as by the vicissitudes of thirteenth-century society.
