A major problem facing urban centers is the decontamination of industrial and residential toxic waste from sites presently being reconverted for urban use. A review of presently available methods indicates prohibitive costs of inefficient solutions. The more recent processes have been simplified to minimize the contamination of the water table and/or the effective control of the effluents from the decontamination sites. The studies reviewed concern toxic materials (i.e. heavy metals and petroleum derivatives) should require separate waste treatment.
