The famous historian Edward Gibbon maintained that Hume's posthumously published Dialogues concerning Natural Religion was, of all his philosophical works, "the most profound, the most ingenious, and the best written." Most commentators on this work have focussed on its epistemological features. In this paper I shall instead seek to bring out the ingenuity of the most important arguments concerning the meaning of theological statements.
