Devi, Lemonde and Sarkar on the basis of their work in this laboratory on the variations of nucleic acids and total nucleotide contents in Tribolium confusum Duval, in the course of development and growth, suggested the presence of a polyphenolic compound or compounds in pupae and adult insects and responsible for pigmentation of the skin of the adult insect. In order to identify the compound chemically it was extracted with water from adult insects. From chemical analysis it appeared that the lyophilized material contained aromatic compounds with free hydroxyl groups in the ring and from chromatographic analysis it was concluded …
Since the ability of a very minute amount of DNase to enhance many times the DNA synthesis and rate of mitosis has been repeatedly demonstrated by several investigators, we studied the variations in the activities of DNase and RNase in liver mitochondria and high-speed supernatant fractions prepared from rats of different ages, beginning from infancy to senility, in order to know if any direct relationship can be found to exist between the activities of these enzymes and the DNA, RNA contents in liver cells at any phase of the life cycle of the animal. Our results indicate that in young …
A systematic investigation on the distribution and assessment of different phosphorus compounds in dystrophic mouse hind leg muscles, livers and brains was undertaken. In hind leg muscles of mouse, exhibiting very acute stage of hereditary dystrophy, an increase of total inorganic, total acid soluble, total acid insoluble and total phosphorus has been noted in contrast to a decrease in the ATP and creatine concentrations in such muscles. In brain no significant change in any of the different phosphorus compounds or creatine content has been found whereas in the liver, a gradual increase in total inorganic, total acid soluble, total acid …
Muscular dystrophy has been repeatedly shown to be associated with one or more biochemical abnormalities caused by either an increase or decrease in the activities of certain enzymes involved in various metabolic processes. Since histochemical techniques are more useful in detecting the appearance and disappearance of certain enzymes and their localizations in different tissues, a systematic investigation on the activities of various enzymes in rabbit and mouse livers and muscles during the progress of the disease was undertaken.
