Devi, Lemonde and Sarkar on the basis of their work in this laboratory on the variations of nucleic acids and total nucleotide contents in Tribolium confusum Duval, in the course of development and growth, suggested the presence of a polyphenolic compound or compounds in pupae and adult insects and responsible for pigmentation of the skin of the adult insect. In order to identify the compound chemically it was extracted with water from adult insects.
