The study will examine the environmental implications of the Transmigration Programme in Indonesia. The program is considered to be the world's largest voluntary assisted migration project. Since 1905 millions of people have been moved from overpopulated areas in the islands of Java, Madura, Bali, and Lombok to new settlements in the less densely populated Outer islands. Many large-scale development projects have been designed and implemented without regard to their impact on the delicate ecological balance or the complex social systems of resource management.
