The past twenty years have seen a substantial increase in the amount of reference and educational materials available for aboriginal languages in Québec. The process of training teachers, preparing materials, documenting lexicon and grammar has proceeded with the close involvement of a linguist for almost every linguistic group. As aboriginal people have gained more expertise in each of these areas, the role of the linguist has shifted from providing direct training of classroom teachers to planning programs and working with native speaking pedagogues as an advisor. Over the last three years, the Cree of the Eastern James Bay region have implemented Cree as a language of instruction in four of the nine communities served by the Cree School Board of Québec. The twenty-year process which has led to this situation, including the requirements of orthography standardization, provision of a dictionary, language and pedagogical training, suitable curriculum material, and community, parental, and administrative support will be reviewed.
