Intensive monitoring of the thermal regime of the snow cover and the near-surface layers of the ground is underway at a woodland site near Schefferville, Quebec. The monitoring employs a datalogging system with enhanced capacity for detailed monitoring of temporal and spatial variations in ground and snow temperatures. A mobile probe system is used for detailed spatial surveys at different times during the winter. Preliminary results show that snow is colder in a shaded and/or shallow snow cover and warmer in a deeper snow cover.
