Social Competence in the Kindergarten: A Peer Modeling Approach

Kindergarten children in ten schools were screened by sociometric measures and teacher ranking of popularity for low levels of social competence, particularly for isolation or rejection. By these means, one hundred and eleven children were screened to participate in the study. Assignment to experimental or control group was made randomly within each school. The experimental group attended a 30-minute weekly session with the school nurse in which Grade two models (selected for popularity) modeled such pro-social behaviours as sharing, giving praise, cooperating, leading activities.
