One hundred and thirty-five children between the ages of two and eight years coming for elective surgery in the Day Surgery Department participated in a study in which they were either held by a parent for the induction of anesthesia or were induced in the usual manner with staff but without parents in the room. Measures of child and parental anxiety, both self-reported and observed, were taken once before, at the time of induction, right after, one and four weeks after surgery.
