A variety of information has been collected about the aging red blood cells (RBC) and their membranes. The RBC can lose a large part of their acetylcholinesterase (AchE) without undergoing much hemolysis or they may undergo a high degree of hemolysis without much loss of their AchE. Formation of methemoglobin has been observed to stimulate the process of hemolysis. However, formation of methemoglobin opposes the release of AchE from the RBC or their membranes.
