A brief history of Markov chain models for communication channels is given. These models are then discussed in more detail. In particular, methods are described which evaluate the parameters of the Markov model and some statistics are presented in terms of sums of exponential functions. There are many channels for which the date matches the model calculations quite accurately. Therefore, from the Markov model, one can obtain a great number of useful facts pertaining to the channel itself.
