Berlin Urban Vernacular (BUV) is one of the most studied urban dialects in Germany (Johnson 1995, Schlobinski 1987, Schönfeld 1989). Since the reunification of East and West Berlin, Schlobinski & Schönfeld have done research on phonological variation in BUV, language evaluations and attitudes. In the special case of r-vocalisation (e.g. [fa:tå]) we tried to find out if and how the vowel quality of / A / is differentiated between East and West Berlin. Spectrographic Analysis allowed us to prove differences in the perception of spoken language in East and West Berlin. I will present the results of our investigation, which …
