Thermal decomposition of Cr2O3 has been studied in the homogeneous gas phase, the solid oxide was melted in a tungsten crucible, the oxide vapors being then transported into an Argon plasma for further decomposition. A plasma torch was coupled with an induction coil to reach 5.3 MHz generator. Solid reaction products were collected along the reactor length and analyzed by wet chemical analysis as well as X-Ray diffraction, IR-Absorption and SEM. Local metallic Cr concentrations as high as 20 wt % were found in the deposits and an average RF coil local oxide conversion into metal being higher than 50%. …
