Coordination compounds between diethylaminoacetonitrile and halides of group IV elements have been prepared. The analytical results, the molecular weight determination and the infrared spectroscopic studies are consistent with the presence of dies give good evidence of chelate formation through the triple bond of the ligand and the nitrogen of the amino group. The obtention of such chelates has been found to be limited to the aminonitriles R2N-(CH2)n-CN in which n was equal to 1 and 2.
In the previous work (Can. J. Chem. 41 - 1963) on the coordination complexes of group IV halides and dinitriles, it has been postulated for some of the compounds that the central element had a coordination number 5, or a coordination number 6 where this coordination 6 was reached through halide bridging. It was thought of interest to use a bidentate ligand where it is easy to determine the coordination of the two different elements. For this purpose ethyl cyanoacetate was used. For all the complexes, except BCl3 one, it was observed that the both cyano as well as carbonyl …
