Vacuum pyrolysis of wood yields approximately 50% by weight of oils, 23% charcoal, 16% pyrolytic water and 11% gas. This oil typically contains 5-10% organic acids, 5-10% sugars, 10-25% oxygenated aromatic compounds with moderate to high polarity and 30-45% high polar and partially polymeric compounds. The process economics greatly improve if the valuable chemicals which are found in this oil can be extracted and sold as by-products together with the fuel oil and charcoal.
