This presentation critically explores child protection practices with non-offending mothers in situations of child sexual abuse from a feminist theoretical perspective. Our presentation offers a cursory overview of the key principles and practices that guide child protection assessments and responses to child sexual abuse. We then briefly look back at how non-offending mothers have been centrally placed in the problem and resolution of child sexual abuse, paying particular attention to the shifting terrain from the 1980s onward, wherein mothers have moved from being blameworthy to responsible for protection.
