In 2012 the Conservative government announced the elimination of the Canadian Studies program. The program was established 35 years ago as a new dimension of Canada's cultural projection overseas. Its challenge was an image of Canada subject to more distortion than that of any other country of comparable political and economic weight. What was needed was a more informed awareness of our character, values and achievements. The program was an almost immediate success and is now served by over 7000 scholars in 55 countries.
