In this paper the influence of society, community forces and family factors on the educational achievement of children of Moroccan origin in Flanders will be discussed. The essay is based on the preliminary analysis of fieldwork carried out as part of a collaborative research project that focuses on the school success of youth of Moroccan, Turkish, Polish and Chinese origin. The relationship between society at large and community forces will receive our special attention. Also the relative influences or the relative explanatory power of the concepts of class, social-economic status and culture on academic achievement will be examined.
