I argue that we nowneed to move well beyond the theoretical horizons of postfordism and to seekout a sui generis description of contemporary capitalism and its urban-economicgeography. I point to four major characteristics of today's capitalismthat are exerting major impacts on the geographical reconstruction of the worldas we know it, i.e. globalization, digital technologies, the new division oflabor, and the deeply intensifying role of knowledge and human sensibility inthe labor process. The implications of these phenomena for urban form andregional development are discussed, with special reference to thecognitive-cultural economy of global city-regions.
