This paper focuses exclusively on normative reasons, so by ‘reason' I shall throughout mean ‘normative reason'. Normative reasons count in favour of actions and attitudes like beliefs, desires, feelings, emotions, etc. The focus is on the broadly meta-normative (rather than narrowly meta-ethical) issue of the metaphysics of reasons. Once we have cleared the common ground (section 2) we shall see that the really controversial meta-normative issues do not arise with respect to the metaphysics of reasons but with respect to the metaphysics of the reason relation.
