The Water Framework Directive challenges European states to harmonize their assessment and improvement of water quality, but also challenges science to provide the underpinning theory and practical methods of implementation the WFD requires. This paper will consider whether river science has the tools to enable this, and combines geography, geomorphology and science studies to analyse WFD science critically.
