Parameters obtained from the crystal field theory and from the stabilities of metal chelates in aqueous solution are used to rationalize the heats of formation of anhydrous transition metal dihalides. An explanation is proposed for the anomalous structures of chromous and cupric compounds and it is shown that lattice energies may be estimated to an accuracy better than that given by the Madelung formula.
