The need for significance and mattering is arguably the pre-eminent social motivation, a core concept underlying such notions as the need to belong, for relatedness, autonomy and competence, among others. In this talk I would discuss the conditions for this need’s arousal, its relation to societal values, and its role in potentiating both love, and aggression, as well as inspiring social movements, revolutions and wars. I would attempt to make the case that it affects us all as individuals, from the cradle to the grave, but also affect collective action that shapes the course of world history.Le besoin de signification …
